The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has launched a new roadmap that outlines a pathway for the country to reach US$50 billion in garment exports by 2021. The document was jointly prepared with the RMIT University of Australia and was released in a recent ceremony in Melbourne. Speaking at the event, the head of the BGMEA said that the roadmap would give “important directives” for the country to reach its goal. (The Daily Star)
 
Bangladesh’s industries minister says that the country needs to up the accelerate the pace at which it trains new workers for the readymade garment industry. Speaking at a recent trade show in Dhaka, minister Amir Hossain Amu said that the country needs an estimated 38,000 technically skilled workers for the sector. He also noted that an efficient training program is a key element in helping the country achieve its US$50 billion export goal by 2021. (Fibre2Fashion)
 
Bangladesh will overtake China as the world’s leading cotton importer by 2020, according to new research from the Australian government. Because of its limited land resources, Bangladesh currently imports more than 6 million bales of cotton annually, a number which could double in the next 4 years.
