A local activist group is speaking out against a plan by the Indian government to set up a textile park in Tamil Nadu. The group says that construction of the facility would exacerbate the already serious pollution problems facing the state caused by emissions from existing facilities in the area, which have reportedly affected local water bodies and agriculture. Fashion retailer C&A has teamed up with the non-profit organization Women on Wings for a new program to boost economic opportunities for women workers in India. The program will allow groups of C&A employees in Europe to travel to India to act as mentors to entrepreneurs there, preparing them to export garments and accessories. Female garment workers in Bangalore will soon get free transportation to and from work. Working with the local Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), India’s Labour Department says it will provide up to 200 dedicated buses to transport thousands of women who work in local garment factories. The garment factories themselves have agreed to bear the cost of this effort.(New Indian Express)
