A new report released by the International Labor Organization (ILO) says that there are over 16 million child laborers in South Asia. The report is based on data collected between 2005 and 2012 from 7 countries, including Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, and also says that many of these children are involved in hazardous work. The ILO estimates that the Asia-Pacific region as a whole is home to the largest population of child laborers at 78 million. (ILO)
The International Labor Organization (ILO) has upheld the fundamental right to strike for workers following a tripartite meeting in Geneva. The issue has been at an impasse since 2012 after employers challenged the right saying that it is not included in ILO Convention 87, even though it had been universally accepted by governments, workers, and employers. The proposal will now be put before the ILO’s governing body for a final vote later this month. (ILO)
