A coalition of trade unions in Cambodia has agreed to propose a US$168 monthly minimum wage in the upcoming negotiations between them, the government, and industry leaders following weeks of disagreement. While some unions had proposed to increase the minimum wage from its current level of US$128 to US$207, others sided with the government which is reportedly asking for only a 10-15% increase. The Labor Ministry says it hopes to finalize and implement a new minimum wage by January 1. (Cambodia Daily)
The Arbitration Council Foundation has released a new report saying that worker strikes may become more prevalent over the next few months as workers increasingly see strikes as a more effective means of negotiation. The group says that the number of strikes encountered during disputes it has mediated jumped from 17 in 2012 to 94 in 2014. Compensation issues have topped the concerns of these workers, according to the report, followed by disciplinary systems and health and safety. (Phnom Penh Post)
