At least 5 garment workers were killed and 65 others injured after two trucks transporting them collided on January 12. Authorities say the collision occurred after one truck tried to overtake the other while en route to a factory. The two vehicles then collided and spun out of control. The country’s Ministry of Labor says it will cover funeral expenses for the deceased as well as medical costs for the injured. (Associated Press)
Over 1,200 Cambodian garment workers fainted while on the job in 2015, according to a report from the country’s National Social Security Fund (NSSF), a number close to that of 2014. According to the NSSF report, overworking, poor health, and exposure to chemical fumes were among the top causes of fainting. The report also called on employers to take a renewed focus on ensuring their workers are provided with a healtha a healthy and safe work environment. (Xinhua News)
A group of union representatives were arrested on January 12 after reportedly inciting violence during a demonstration against conditions in a garment factory. Authorities in Chbar Mon City say the group of 5 traveled to the city to “create anarchy” in what had otherwise been a peaceful demonstration. The strike centers around a demand for fixed-term contracts and an increase in monthly allowances. (Cambodia Daily)
