Garment exports from Bangladesh grew by 7.8% year-on-year in January to reach US$2.75 billion, according to the Export Promotion Bureau. This comes despite fears from analysts that unrest connected to the recent national elections would hamper exports, and in fact the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers Association (BGMEA) recently stated that orders dropped by 50% between September and December of 2013. Leaders of the National Garment Workers Federation led a demonstration in front of the National Press Club demanding that the families of the victims of last year’s Rana Plaza building collapse receive adequate compensation. The group’s president demanded that government officials double the amount of compensation that they paid to the families and that overseas brands and buyers should also pitch in. New Age BD
