Better Factories Cambodia, an initiative of the International Labor Organization (ILO), has launched an online transparency database which outlines how garment factories in the country measure up to ethical working standards. These include wages, discrimination, working hours, and fire and building safety. The ILO hopes that the new database will help restore confidence in Cambodia’s garment industry and encourage chronically non-compliant facilities to address their issues.
A planned stay-at-home strike among Cambodian garment workers failed to gain traction last week after 6 unions who had agreed to participate pulled out. The strike was planned earlier this month as a way to push for higher wages and demand the release of a group of activists who have been in custody since a deadly protest crackdown earlier this year.Cambodia Daily
