Bangladesh’s Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed says that the pending Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement will not have a major impact on the country’s garment exports. Speaking at the recent Bangladesh Economist’s Forum, Ahmed noted that with the exception of Vietnam most of the signatories to the TPP do not have a major stake in the global garment trade and would not pose a threat to Bangladesh. Several notable economists and businessmen doubt these assertions, however, saying that countries like Vietnam would begin to pose a significant threat to Bangladesh once the TPP comes into effect. Bangladesh is pressing India’s weaving industry to increase its investments in the country as a way to meet their demand. A delegation of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) recently visited Dhaka where textile industry leaders touted the benefits and potential of increased investment in the country’s weaving sector. It’s estimated that Bangladesh only produces about 40% of the fabric needed to supply it burgeoning readymade garment industry, opening the door for increased foreign investment. (Fibre2Fashion)
