The readymade garment industry has played an important role in accelerating the overall economic growth of Bangladesh, according to a new study published by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the International Labor Organization (ILO). The report says that the garment industry has resulted in significant economic growth over the past decade and that it can continue to push the country forward if government leaders focus on investments in infrastructure and education. The International Labor Organization (ILO) is joining forces with the Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defense (BFSCD) group to train over 300 inspectors in factory electrical safety. The BFSCD says that electrical issues are responsible for 75% of garment factory fires in Bangladesh and that the training will help reduce risks and ensure all facilities are compliant with national standards. Bangladesh needs to focus on technology investments in order to meet its export goal of US$50 billion by 2021, according to presenters at the recent “Modernization of the Apparel Industry” conference in Dhaka. Speakers at the event noted that globalization is driving the necessity for technological innovation in the industry because technological solutions are increasingly being used for process improvement, product innovation, and skill improvement.
