A factory worker was killed and two others injured after a fire broke out at the Mega Yarn Dyeing Mills factory in Gazipur. Authorities say that the fire began during early morning hours on the 3rd floor of the facility. It had reportedly been inspected by both the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh and the Alliance for Bangladesh Worker Safety which released a statement mourning the loss of the one worker, but also praising recent training efforts for preventing any further casualties. At least 15 garment workers were injured after the bus they were riding in slid off of the road and into a ditch. Authorities say that the workers were employed by a factory in Chittagong and were making their way home to celebrate the Eid festival. The injured workers were taken to the hospital. Authorities say that they are investigating the incident. (Dhaka Tribune)
Bangladesh could soon regain its preferential trade status with the United States under the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) program, according to U.S. Ambassador Dan Mozena, as long as the country adheres to the improvement guidelines set out for the garment industry. Mozena says that officials will evaluate Bangladesh’s progress during an upcoming meeting in Belgium. (Fibre2Fashion)
