An estimated 150 million public-sector workers across India participated in what is being called one of the largest strikes in history. The strike was called by 10 trade unions around the country to demonstrate against economic policies they view as unfavorable, including a proposed increase in the minimum wage for unskilled workers that was deemed insufficient by workers’ groups. Indian President Pranab Mukherjee has signed the Goods and Services Tax (GST) bill into law. This clears the way for the formation of the GST Council which will consist of the national and state finance ministers and will be responsible for setting tax rates and policies for traders in the country. The new law is intended to streamline tax policies across the country and is expected to take full effect by April of next year. (Fibre2Fashion)
